About the ACHC Historic Survey

In 1986 the Angelina County Historical Commission hired a historical consulting firm, Victor and Victor, to survey structures throughout the county.  The result of survey was a  three-volume report containing descriptions of just over 1000 properties’ physical condition including architectural and historical significance.   There are resources in four sizable towns as well as some smaller locales (Diboll, Huntington, LufkinZavalla, and Other Towns) as well as a few various individual sites in scattered locations included in the 1986 survey.  (Click here to see ACHC 1986 Vol 1, ACHC 1986 Vol 2, and ACHC 1986 Vol 3 in pdf format – warning, Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 are large files!)  Based on that survey, residents and commissioners have nominated properties to the National Register of Historic Places.  In January 2014, the ACHC contact the Center for Regional Heritage Research about the possibility of digitizing the 1986 report in order to expand access and usability.  Phase 1, digitization and website development, began in June 2014.  In 2015-2017 the Diboll Historical Society resurveyed all properties in Diboll and those entries were updated in summer 2018.

The original survey report was organized by town and street.  That arrangement has been preserved.  Click on each of the towns or county regions listed below to view its individual properties.  Whenever possible, we have included links to the appropriate sheet of the Sanborn Map as referenced in the 1986 survey.  The digitized Sanborn Maps are part of the Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection at the University of Texas at Austin.  The collection includes only Lufkin maps from 1904, 1908, 1915, and 1922.
